Breaking out of the color rut

This is another dresser that was found on the curb, destined for the dump.  I just feel the need to "save" all the discarded pieces of furniture.  I see what they can become....they almost always have a lot more life left in them, they just need someone to help them transition.   This one had a few minor problems.  It had a drawer that was broke and the top was in pretty bad shape.IMG_0442

I decided to turn this into an entertainment center.  I built shelves in the top part to house the receiver and blue ray player.  I used some tongue and groove wood that I found in the scrap section of home depot to build the shelves.  I also flipped the top over and stainedd it a deep ebony.  IMG_0441 IMG_0440

I decided to do this one in a bright cheery color.  I have mainly stuck with the e blues and whites up to this point.  I chose a buttercup yellow for this project and then distressed it and sealed it with an ebony stain.  I really like how this turned out.  I liked it so much that I kept it.  I had originally picked this up for a friend to have but it really was too big for her space.  So I gave her the one that I had made a few months back.... it too was found on the curb.  (I love curbs) :) Ok enough chatting.... here is the pictures.

My son said I had skills!!!!!

My son actually said that I had skills and should do this stuff for a living!  Yay.... I feel so proud.  IMG_0352 IMG_0353I have been busy working on my oldest son's room makeover.  He said that is what he wanted for his birthday this year and it was definitely due for an update.   I only got a few before pictures of the furniture and I haven't located the before pics of his room so really only the after pictures are here for you to see and those were taken with my phone (sorry).  My camera battery is dead.  I wanted to get this post up so this will have to do.  It was just a plain, no character room before.... it's now probably the best looking room in the house. :) He loves it.  I hope you like it too.  The dresser and night stand came from a thrift store 10 years ago and was pretty worn out.  The headboard was my grandfathers.  He was sleeping on a futon before the makeover.  ( He loves sleeping in a real bed now).  This room was done on a serious budget.  less than 250.00 for everything including paint, bedding, window treatment and all the accessories.  I got pretty creative with everything trying to incorporate who he is in this room.  Little touches of things that he loves here and there.   I purchased everything at thrift stores, salvation army and garage sales.  With the exception of the bedding and curtains.  I wanted it to have a masculine, modern high-end look but comfortable at the same time.  I think I achieved that.  He said that he feels like he is in a nice hotel room.  (MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!)IMG_0363IMG_0380 IMG_0382 IMG_0379IMG_0375 IMG_0374 IMG_0373 IMG_0372 IMG_0371 IMG_0370 IMG_0369 IMG_0368 IMG_0367 IMG_0366HAPPY BIRTHDAY!IMG_0377 IMG_0365 IMG_0364 IMG_0378
